In 1999, the Veatch Board of Governors initiated the Urban Social Justice Ministry Project. The churches funded through this program reflect a broad definition of 'urban church.' Over the past five years the ministries, supported by a technical assistance fund, have formed a collective now known as the Urban Disciples. They meet regularly to learn about one another's ministries and urban contexts, share theological reflection on their work, and do economic, social, and theological analysis of the circumstances of the cities in which they work. They seek to draw denominational attention to our cities as sources of vibrant and inclusive congregational life and to draw UU's into deeper engagement with radical justice making as an expression of our faith. The work of the group currently includes producing print and web resources to share with other UU ministries, and organizing regional gatherings as follow-up to the 2004 Urban Ministries Consultation. The next western regional gathering is scheduled for February 2-5th, 2006 at First Unitarian Church of San Jose.
